When it comes to decorating your home, you will want to choose colors that will work well with others. For your wall color, we often suggest neutral colors, that way you can switch up your smaller decor pieces without having to re-paint your walls every time.
You will first need to come up with a color palette for your room. This will all be based on the theme and feel you are trying to exhibit in this room. Each room in your house can and may be different, and that’s great! It gives you more opportunities to express your personality throughout your home.
So let’s go over some of the best ways to combine colors in your home and show you some amazing inspiration photos.
Follow The 60-30-10 Rule
If you’ve never heard of the 60-30-10 rule, let us tell you a little bit about it. It’s a classic home decor rule that helps create the perfect color palette for your room. This is how it is split — 60% of your room should be your dominant color and be applied with things such as your wall colors (accent walls being the exception) and large decor pieces such as your sofa or rug. 30% of your room should be a secondary color. This color should be different enough from your dominant color, but they should still compliment each other. This color can be used in other furniture pieces, curtains, and linens. The last 10% of your room should be your accent color. This can be used for accent throw blankets or pillows, framed artwork, and other little trinkets around your space.
Keep Your Color Flowing
Once you have chosen the color palette for your room, stick with it. You won’t want to add many more colors, because that will overcomplicate things. Instead, keep your three colors flowing throughout your home. Like everything on our Learning Center, these are just suggestions, so in the end, do whatever you want to do! If you want to make each room in your home a different theme, style, or color — go for it!
It may be easier to keep the color flowing throughout each room. It will keep your decor cohesive and will make the decorating process that much easier for you. Now, this doesn’t mean each room needs to be identical and matching, but instead coordinate and let it flow as we said earlier!
Use The Color Wheel
When it comes to deciding which colors to use in your home using the color wheel will be a huge help. We all know that the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Other colors are created by using these colors and mixing them. So how do you use the color wheel? It’s simple, there’s more to just colors looking good together. In fact, there is actual science behind it. The color wheel is a visual representation of colors and the relationship between primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors. To find colors that complement each other well, you will have to follow the saying “opposites attract”. Colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel work well together and help to create a bright and beautiful display. For example, red and green work well together (Christmas, duh!) as well as blue and orange, yellow and purple, green and pink, and so on!
Find Your Balance
There is a lot to consider when choosing a color for your home. Sure, you need to find the actual color, but you also will need to find the temperature of the color and balance it throughout your space. So what is a color’s temperature? There are cool colors and warm colors. Cool colors consist of your blues, greens, and purples. Warm colors consist of yellow, red, and orange. To create a balance in your home, you will want to equally distribute both cool and warm colors. Too many cool colors can create a cold and unfriendly space. Too many warm colors can feel crowded. A perfect balance of the two can create a beautiful and comfortable space in your home.
