What Is a Lithograph?

A lithograph is a printmaking technique that dates back to the late 18th century. It involves creating an image on a flat stone or metal plate using oil-based ink and then pressing it onto paper. Woah! Lithographs became popular for their ability to produce high-quality, detailed prints, making fine art more accessible.

Today, lithographs are still used by artists and collectors, with both hand-pulled and modern digital reproductions available. If you own a signed piece or a contemporary lithograph print, proper framing ensures its longevity and visual impact. And we’re the pros!

How Thick Is a Lithograph?

A traditional lithograph is typically printed on high-quality, thick paper or cardstock, often ranging from 0.3mm to 0.6mm. (about 0.012 to 0.024 inches thick!) Fine art lithographs are usually produced on heavyweight, archival-quality giclee paper to enhance durability and longevity.

We can frame any thinner art from 5″x5″ up to 42″x62″. Our Metal frames have room for artwork up to 1/4″ thick. (This includes matting, so if your frame has a single mat the artwork shouldn’t exceed 3/16″ thick and if it is double matted the artwork shouldn’t exceed 1/8″ thick.) The spring clips that hold your art into the frame will adjust perfectly as long as your art doesn’t exceed this thickness. Our Wood frames have room for artwork up to 1/8″ thick if they have no mats or one mat, and up to 1/16″ if they have two mats.

Are There Prints of Lithographs?

Yes! There are two main types of lithographs:

  1. Original Lithographs – Created directly by the artist on a stone or metal plate and printed in limited editions. Each print is considered an original piece of art. Fancy!
  2. Reproduction Lithographs – These are printed copies of original artwork using modern offset or digital printing techniques. While they capture the essence of the original, they are not hand-pulled prints.

Both types of lithographs can benefit from custom framing to protect their details and maintain their artistic integrity.

Why Custom Framing Lithographs Matters

Investing in a high-quality frame for any art not only enhances the artwork but also protects it from environmental damage. Here’s why custom framing is essential:

1. Preservation & Protection

Lithographs, like any fine art print, can be prone to fading, discoloration, and deterioration over time. Using archival-quality framing materials helps prevent these issues.

  • UV-Protective Acrylic: Blocks harmful sunlight that can fade ink over time.
  • Acid-Free Matting & Backing: Prevents yellowing and deterioration of the paper.
  • Proper Mounting Techniques: Ensures the lithograph is held securely without adhesives that can damage the paper.

2. Enhancing Aesthetics

A framed lithograph should complement both the artwork itself and your space. Custom framing allows you to select the perfect fit:

  • Frame Styles: Choose from classic wood frames, sleek metal picture frames, or ornate frames to match the art’s era and style.
  • Matting Options: Neutral or colored matting can add depth and draw attention to the lithograph. We’re fans of double matting to add even more pazazz to your frame.
  • Float Mounting: A popular choice for prints with deckled edges, allowing the lithograph to “float” within the frame.

3. Perfect Fit & Sizing

Unlike standard poster frames, custom framing ensures that your framed lithographs are protected without needing to trim or compromise their original size. This is especially important for signed or limited-edition prints, where maintaining authenticity is key.

His artwork often featured graceful women, flowing hair, and floral motifs, making pieces like Job and The Seasons timeless classics. Mucha’s lithograph frames were designed to enhance his decorative compositions, elevating them from simple prints to collectible masterpieces. Today, framed lithographs of his work remain highly sought after, embodying the beauty and craftsmanship of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Framed Lithograph vs. Unframed Lithograph: Which Is Right for You?

Choosing between a framed lithograph and an unframed lithograph depends on your needs, style preferences, and preservation goals. A framed lithograph offers protection from dust, moisture, and UV damage, ensuring the artwork remains in top-notch condition for years. Custom framing also enhances the visual appeal, complementing the lithograph’s details and making it display-ready. On the other hand, an unframed lithograph provides flexibility—you can store it safely in a portfolio, frame it later to match your decor, or even sell it in its original form. While unframed lithographs may require extra care to prevent damage, they allow collectors and artists to personalize the framing process.

Choosing the Right Lithograph Frame

When selecting a frame, consider the following:

  • Material: Wood frames provide a traditional, timeless look, while metal frames offer a sleek, modern feel.
  • Color & Finish: Match the frame to the tones in the artwork for a cohesive presentation.
  • Glass or Acrylic Choice: Museum-grade acrylic is a lightweight, shatter-resistant option with superior UV protection.
  • Matting: Single or double mats can enhance the artwork, providing contrast and depth.
