    Frame Styles

    Wood Frames

    Wood Style Frame

Go au naturel! Depending on the style, our wood picture frames are made from various materials: usually either a North American hardwood or a quality composite (MDF). Some wood frame styles have a decorative wood pattern wrap (that makes them consistently colored and evenly patterned on all sides), while some are painted/stained (which means the natural variations in the wood will be more visible and give it some character).

*Finger-jointed frames are made from recycled solid wood pieces that are bonded and joined together.

**Wrapped wood has a decorative covering which allows for a perfectly consistent finish.

    Metal Frames

    Metal Style Frame

Our metal picture frames steel the show. Get it? Well, actually they are made out of aluminum through a process called "extrusion". First, an aluminum billet (basically an aluminum log) is heated to almost a thousand degrees and forced (using 750 tons of pressure!) through a die shaped like the style being created. The newly extruded aluminum (not steel, it was a joke!) is then placed on a "stretcher" where all straightness imperfections are removed. Finally, the aluminum is either anodized or powder coated, converting the surface of the material into a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant finish.

    Metal Frame Style Comparison

*Extruded aluminum where the surface has been converted to be decorative, durable, and corrosion-resistant, meaning the frame rails are extremely rigid and high-quality.

    Matting

    Matting

Jazz up your art or photography! Our custom-cut matboards are the perfect decorative touch for any frame. Choose from over 70 options, including 50+ colors (from greens and blues to hot pinks and reds!), metallics, patterns, premium conservation mats, thicker plys, and 100% cotton museum-quality matting. Each mat is alkaline-buffered to be acid-neutral, which slows the aging process of the mat as well as the artwork it comes in contact with.

    Backing

    Acid-Free Foamcore

    Acid-Free Foamcore

Keeping it classy! Our premium backing is 1/4" thick, and is ideal for valuable or long-term framed artwork. Buffered with an alkaline solution, it combats acids in most printed pieces, helping to preserve your artwork longer.

    Prints

Our print lab uses top-of-the-line large-format printers and uses archival-grade ink. We use such high-quality equipment and materials because we just wouldn't feel right about printing your most cherished memories using anything less. Your print should be the star of the show in your finished frame! We offer three paper options:

    Photo Paper

Attention shutterbugs! Our Photo Paper is a semi-matte, bright white paper with a slight gloss/luster to it. It has a smooth surface and subtle sheen that will bring brightness and richness to prints. Perfect for photographs and text-heavy images, as well as most general all-purpose uses.

    Art Paper

Our Art Paper is a true classic! It’s a cotton natural white paper that is matte with no gloss or luster to it. It has the slightest warmth and semi-smooth surface that will bring elegance and nuance to prints. Best for artwork reproduction and/or digital graphics and art.

    Giclee Paper

Hey artists! Our Giclée Paper is a cotton, heavyweight fine art paper that is fully matte and has a slight texture to it. There are no optical brighteners and it is both acid-free and lignin-free. It has a gentle warmth and a semi-smooth texture that enhances the intricacy and richness of giclée prints. Great for fine art reproductions that are of conservation and museum quality.

For our more technical customers, we print at up to 1200x1200 DPI and stay as true to your uploaded file as possible. We never resample or perform destructive edits to your image. We maintain the exact profile and color space embedded within your file and never remove it or add our own. The only thing we can't do is calibrate our print output to what you see on your display - which means if you're looking for extremely precise color matching on your print output, you'll want to work with a color lab.

    Made in America

All frames are hand-crafted by skilled artisans in our Derby, Connecticut facility using Made in America materials.

  • Can you print my photo?

Yes, and we’d love to! You can order just a print, or we can professionally print and frame your photographs on any of our paper types. A framed print will arrive in just a few days, 100% assembled and ready to hang on the wall - no work on your part besides tapping the (included) hook into the wall.

    Here's what you do:

    1. Pick a photo from your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

    2. Choose what size you want your photo printed, from a small table-top frame to a large poster.

    3. Pick your favorite of our many frame and matboard styles and colors. You'll see a preview of what your frame will look like.

    4. We'll print your photo in the size you picked using a professional-grade large format printer, and then build the frame you designed to the exact size of the photo. We can build any size frame, so we don't need to crop any of the details from your photo.

Each frame is built using 100% premium American-made materials and comes fully assembled with everything you need to hang it on your wall - no need to buy any additional accessories.

  • Can you save my photos?

Any prints that you purchase can be stored in your personal image library when you create an account. That way you can come back and re-order with ease. However, we don't currently offer an option to store photos that have not already been printed with us.

  • Can my frame sit on a table?

Frame can't hang? No problem, we've got the solution!

All of our frames are designed to hang on the wall, but our EaselMate accessor easily installs onto our frames and allows them to stand up as a tabletop frame.

The EaselMate supports frames up to 13" for width and 19" for height for their outside dimensions.

Grab an EaselMate from our Accessories page, or learn even more about creating a custom frame tabletop display with the EaselMate.

  • Do I need to buy any accessories?

Nope! Each of our frames comes with everything you need to hang it on the wall, so it’s not necessary to purchase additional accessories. You might still want to take a peek at our Accessories page, though, just in case a useful add-on catches your eye. The accessories page is also where we sell replacement components for frames you already have. You may want to sample a mat color, try a new acrylic cover, or swap out a print!

One exception... If you already have your artwork and need to mount it to the matboard, you'll want to purchase our framer's tape to keep your work nice and snug in the frame.

  • Can I order samples?

We get it, ya wanna see before ya commit! Samples of our frame components can be ordered individually on our Accessories page. This includes frames, matboards, acrylic, and paper types. We recommend ordering the item you're looking for a sample of in the smallest size. For example, a 5" x 5" swatch of matboard or a 5” x 5” frame style of your choice.

  • Can I order individual parts of frames?

Yes! Our Accessories page sells all frame components as separate items. A few things to keep in mind:

    • If you are ordering a "Frame Only", please enter the size of the internal components (cover, backing, and/our outside dimensions of the matting) going into the frame shell as the Inside Width and Inside Height.
    • The "Cover" and "Backing" should be the same size as the internal components (cover, backing, and/our outside dimensions of the matboard) in the frame that you already have to ensure that the new backing and/or cover perfectly fit the frame's inside dimensions.
    • Your frame will still need a "Cover" and "Backing" to work properly (whether you order them from us or already have them).
    • We cover the Art Size entered by 1/4" on each side, which means that the frame will fit the size you enter for the Art Size, but the opening in the frame will show 1/2" less than the width and 1/2" less than the height entered for the Art Size. This ¼” overlap helps to hold your art in place within the frame. Please account for this when ordering individual parts of frames.

Measurements

  • How do I measure my art?

    Measure like this

Measuring is hard, we know! But let’s keep it simple. Measure each side of your artwork from edge to opposite edge. The "width" is left-to-right, and "height" is top-to-bottom. Make sure to use the correct "width" and "height" so we build your frame in the correct orientation! (We strongly advise the use of a standard, rigid tape measure.)

The yellow area is the 1/4" which will end up covered by the frame or matboard. If you have important details (such as a signature) on the very edge of your artwork, you can remove the 1/4" overlap. Just enter the Art Size as 1/2" larger than the width and 1/2" larger than the height you would like for the opening in your frame. That’s a lot to take in. Please reach out to us with any questions or read even more on measuring your art.

  • How do I choose the frame’s orientation?

Which way is up, you mean? Our frames are built with your “width" measurement as "left to right" and your "height" measurement as "top to bottom".

Our frame preview takes the "Width" and "Height" you specify and shows you exactly what your frame will look like on the wall. If you need your frame to hang in the opposite orientation than the one you see in the preview, simply switch the "Width" and "Height" measurements.

For example, a 24" x 36" frame would hang vertically in the portrait orientation, but a 36" x 24" frame would hang horizontally in the landscape orientation. Still confused? Here are all the frame orientation details you could ever want to know!

  • How thick can my artwork be?

Our metal frames without matting have the most room for art and can hold art that doesn’t exceed 1/4" thick. If your metal frame has a single mat, the artwork shouldn't exceed 3/16" thick, and if it is double matted, the artwork shouldn't exceed 1/8" thick. The included backing springs that hold your art in the frame will adjust perfectly as long as your art doesn't exceed this thickness.

Our wood frames have room for artwork up to 1/8" thick if they have no mats or one mat and up to 1/16" if they have two mats.

  • My art has important details near the edge.

The devil is always in the details! Whether you get a frame with or without a mat, we will cut the frame to cover the art size by 1/4" on each side. This is so that the art doesn't "fall through" the matting, or in the case of a frame without matting, show any borders around the art.

If you have artwork with important details such as an artist's signature, or visually important details around the outer edge that you don't want to cover, you can enter the Art Size as 1/2" larger than the width and 1/2" larger than the height you want for the exact frame opening to see the entire space you want visible in the frame's opening.

For example, if you wanted an exact opening in your frame of 10" X 10", you would use an art size of 10 1/2" x 10 1/2". This way, we'll send you a frame that doesn't overlap the exact space that you want to see. However, you might need Framer's Tape to hold the art in place since it will not be overlapped by the frame.

Videos & Instructions

  • Wood frame assembly

    Step 1

Step 1: Bend back the metal tabs holding the frame contents in place. Take care in doing so, as these may be sharp.

    Step 2

Step 2: Remove the frame contents and insert your artwork. Add corner bumpers between frame and wall.

    Step 3

Step 3: Replace the frame contents and bend the tabs back in. Loop the hanging wire around itself once pulled through the other hanging bracket.

  • Metal frame assembly

    Caution!
The corners of our metal frames are carefully mitered to achieve a perfect fit and finish. Their edges are sharp and should be handled carefully.

    Step 1

Step 1: Drop hanging wire brackets into place and tighten their screws. Loosen two bottom screws shown.

    Step 2

Step 2: Remove the bottom rail and slide frame contents out. Install your art, replace contents, and tighten screws.

    Step 3

Step 3: Insert backing springs spaced evenly between the backing and the channel it rests in. Put one wall bumper on each corner.

  • Secure hanging hardware

Check out our VERY detailed instructions for using secure hanging hardware here.

  • What is a support wire?

For those big ol’ wood frames with an inside frame size of 30" or larger and metal frames with an inside frame size of 36" or larger, a support wire is included. You’re welcome! The support wire (labeled as such) will run from the top to the bottom of the frame to keep it stable. On wood frames, the support wire is applied vertically. On metal frames, the support wire is applied diagonally. The tension from the support wire and the metal brackets keeps the frame from warping over time. Alert! You are not meant to hang your frame from a support wire.

    Support Wire vs. Hanging Wire

    • The hanging wire for metal frames holds your frame to the hook on the wall. It should be nice and taut in between both Euro Hangers, and it should be placed on a hook. Adjust until the frame looks level.
    • The hanging wire for wood frames is the same wire used for metal frames. The hanging wire comes pre-attached to the D-Rings, with one side untethered so you can easily remove the backing of your frame and place your artwork into it.
    • The support wire for both metal and wood is for larger-sized frames. It is meant to prevent the frame from bowing and warping over time. Our professional recommendation is to not remove the support wire.
    • Support Wire for Metal Frames: Unlike the hanging wire, the support wire is applied diagonally across our metal frames.
      Support Wire (Metal)
    • Support Wire for Wood Frames: The support wire is applied from the middle of the top of the frame to the middle of the bottom of the frame.
      Support Wire (Wood)
  • How do I mount my art?

You've got options! There are 2 different methods that we recommend for mounting your art in your frame using Framer's Tape, which you can purchase through our Accessories page.

You can use the H-Mount Method to adhere the art to either the backing/matboard without an opening in it.

You can use the T-Hinge Method to mount the art to the matboard with an opening in it.

  • Preparing your acrylic

Our frames without prints have a protective film on both sides of the cover, but our frames with prints only have a protective film on the front-facing side of the cover. Use a fingernail or a piece of tape to peel up the corners, and carefully pull back the film from the cover to remove it before assembling your frame. WE REPEAT there is protective film on our covers so please remove ALL protective film to get a picture-perfect result.

Pro Tip: For non-glare covers, make sure that the shiny side is facing toward your artwork and the non-glare side is facing away from your artwork.

  • Fixing uneven corners
Misaligned frame rails Adjust frame rails to fit together Properly aligned frame rails

All shook up? Your metal frame corners may have come loose during shipping, but don’t worry! There is an easy fix. Locate the metal brackets on the back of your frame near the gap and loosen the screws. Push the two sides of the frame together and re-tighten the screws. Easy peasy!

  • Can you white-label my order?

Yes, we can! Our white labeling service lets you use Frame It Easy to fulfill orders for your customers. We’ll remove our branding and replace it with yours on all packing slips, labels, and shipping boxes. Here's what happens when you select the free white labeling option at checkout:

    Clean, no-branding packing slip

Whitelabeling means there will be no trace of Frame It Easy on the frame, any of its pieces, the packing slip, or the box. Instead, we'll print your company name and logo if you provided one, or a blank space otherwise. You can also add a custom message to your packing slip!

    Product label without any branding

In the rare case that the recipient has an issue with their order, they will contact you about it. You can, of course, reach out to us on their behalf, and we'll be happy to help!

Shipping

  • How long will it take to get to me?

We know the wait is the hardest part! Each frame is custom-made in 8-10 business days. Once shipped, you'll get a tracking email so you know exactly when to expect your order. The map below shows estimated delivery times.

  • Can you rush my order?

We can do many things, but we cannot rush your order. Rome was not built in a day, and neither will your frame! If you have a timeframe in mind, reach out to us, and we'll help you figure out whether your order can arrive on time.

  • Can I ship this as a gift?

How lucky are they! You sure can! Ensure you fill out your billing information correctly, but put the lucky recipient as the shipping address. We include a packing slip in each box that details its contents, but it doesn't list what you paid for the order, just like a gift receipt.

  • Do you ship outside the USA?

We are able to ship to our friends in Canada and to our heroes at US military APO/FPO/DPO addresses.

My Order

  • My uploaded file doesn’t look right!

Every screen displays images slightly differently, but we print directly from your file to keep it as true to the original as possible, using top-quality printers, ink, and paper. If there’s any concern, we’ll reach out before printing.

We’ve covered all the details on file formats for you, so be sure to check it out!

For our technical customers, the most likely cause of this is that your file is a JPG in the print-ready CMYK color space, but your web browser is rendering it in RGB. If it appears correctly when opening the same file in your favorite graphical editor, then you can be assured we'll receive it and print it in that color space. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to us, and we'd be happy to help!

  • I made a mistake or need to adjust my order.

Whoops! No biggie. Please contact us and let us know as quickly as possible! We'll work with you as much as we can.

  • There is an issue with my order.

Say what? Please reach out to us! We stand behind the quality and workmanship of our frames 100% and will make it right if we've made a mistake.

  • What’s your return policy?

You can return your order for any reason. Please see our Return Policy for all the details.

That being said, if there's something wrong with your order or something you don't like, we'd love a chance to make you happy. Just contact us and let us know what's going on! We don't want any of our customers to be unhappy for any reason.

  • The acrylic is scratched/foggy.

Acrylic cover looking like it went through a rough patch? We might have an easy fix! Our frames without prints have covers with two protective films - one on each side. Our frames with prints have only one protective film on the front-facing side of the covers. It's this film's job to get scuffed and scratched so that when you take it off, your cover will look perfect! Please make sure that you've removed all film from the cover to get a flawless result. You can easily peel up the corners of the film with a fingernail or piece of tape and carefully pull the film away from the cover to remove it.

If there's still an issue with your cover, reach out to us with some photos of the problem, and we'll be able to help.

  • It’s the best!
